A tuberosity is a large, rounded bump or projection of bone, usually located on the surface of a long bone that serves as a point of attachment for muscle, tendon, or ligament. It is formed by the enlargement, or swelling, of a roughened area of the bone, characterized by dense, fibrous tissue that makes up the insertion site of a muscle. Tuberosities are named based on their location on the bone, such as greater tuberosity, lesser tuberosity, or deltoid tuberosity. They are commonly found in the shoulder, hip, knee, and elbow joints. Medical conditions that affect tuberosities include rotator cuff tears, hip fractures, and patellar tendinitis.
